FAQ

  • I am new to WordPress and Woocomerce, what is it?

WordPress is an open-source content management system licensed under GPLv2, which means that anyone can use or modify the WordPress software for free. A content management system is basically a tool that makes it easy to manage important aspects of your website – like content – without needing to know anything about programming. You can create any type of website with WordPress. WooCommerce is a customisable, open-source eCommerce platform built on WordPress. With WooCommerce on top of WordPress you can build customised and flexible online stores.

  • How prepared should I be before the project starts?

Ideally when you start a new Qala project you will already have your brand book, and your website content planned out. This helps us plan the project to include all of the elements you need. It also means we can do the project in a much shorter time frame. On top of that, it’s always useful having a budget for your development set aside, so we can make quick decisions together, and a point person on your end that can work with our team on a day to day basis.

  • Will you design me a logo also for my brand?

We are not a branding agency, so this is not something we specialise in. We have experience working with external agencies on branding, and we can make sure that process is flawless.

  • What if my website is a new idea or a new sector to what you’ve worked on before?

All websites are broken down into either a Learning management system (LMS), Content Management System (CMS), or E-commerce (web stores). If WordPress can’t offer the features and requirements that you need out of the box, we can integrate 3rd party software to help us achieve the outcome you want. We are well-skilled consultants who can solve business problems, and together we will find the best setup for you. Similar business problems are found across different web visitors, website types and business operations of certain sizes (not simply exclusive to one sector in our years of experience), so we can draw on our past experience to create the most optimised solution for your website.

  • Are there any credit card fees for transactions?

We invoice on a monthly basis and you will receive invoices from our finance team, so there are no additional charges there. If you are running an ecommerce business, we help you by advising on the best payment gateways to minimise these fees and charges when selling to customers.

  • Can I use any third-party plugins with Qala?

Qala is built with the best industry practices and with compatibility in mind. Therefore most third party plugins should work with Qala as long as they are also built with good practices. Qala even utilises the strength of the open source community of WordPress and uses well written third party plugins as part of its package. Not doing so would be going against the open source ethos. However, since Qala is all about quality and stability we continuously evaluate third party plugins if they are safe to use and compatible with Qala as well as unique features for your site. We also acknowledge that you decide to partner with us for our expertise and as such we like to help you pick third party plugins that not only work with Qala, but also align with the business problems you aim to solve.

  • Can I use my own domain name?

Yes! We do not provide a service for live domains as a subdomain like Blogger or Shopify. It is widely accepted that your own domain is a must for any serious business presence online and domains are rather cheap unless you want to buy an existing established one. We can help you buy any domains you like and configure them for your new site and if you opt to use our hosting as your DNS provider we will make all the necessary configurations for you.

  • What belongs to me if I decide to end the contract?

You will continue to have a working site. All your website’s code belongs to you, including your current parent theme and any Qala feature plugins. You will however not continue to receive updates to these features from us and in the case of a plugin using a specific server software hosted by us you’ll either need to deactivate that plugin or get the same software set up and configured in your new hosting.

  • Does the “Initial Build Price” for Qala include a child-theme? How much customisation in terms of design/branding do they get?

Yes. The way your unique Qala site is set up is that you’ll have your own child theme, which uses our Qala theme as its parent. By doing so we ensure that we can ship new features, bug fixes etc. directly to your site by simply updating the parent theme as we improve it.

The initial build includes a style guide design by our designer which is implemented by our developers. This roughly consists of Logo, colours, typography, button design and overall branding. Since content is mostly created with the Block builder (Gutenberg) using your branding you’ll be limitless in creating unique layouts on top of that. More on Design Principles here.

  • What security is offered for my site?

On an application level we adhere to all the security best practices for the code that we write and we require any new third party plugin or code to pass a visual inspection and security scan (if applicable).

We provide solid security features on a server level thanks to our in-house hosting company. When running on Synotio, you also get bruteforce protection built in using the wp-fail2ban plugin. All login attempts are reported to a central server which makes us able to use the intelligence gathered from all sites to block bruteforce or dictionary attacks – sometimes even before they happen. We insist on using CloudFlare Pro (20 EUR/mo), and use their WAF functionality which is a more active form of protection against DDoS and plugin-specific attacks.
